Urgency, good. Rushing, bad.
- Be humble and curious. Take the time to learn what’s going on, how things work, and what has been tried before. Invite people to coffee.
- Don’t rush it. Don’t expect to transform an organization in a short tour of duty. Government operates slowly for good reasons. “Fail fast” is irresponsible in this environment. You’re there to move carefully and fix things.
- Pick a doable thing out of a larger problem that you can clearly define.
