Freeman told the trooper Pittsfield Township police told him “it shouldn’t be a problem” to live near the school. He had registered with Pittsfield police 27 days earlier using his family's Dalton Avenue address.There's got to be some other label we can apply here that doesn't imply rape. Stories like this weaken the label when it's appropriate as well.

But the age of consent in Michigan is 16, which means that, so far as the law is concerned, anybody who has sex with a 15-year-old is a rapist, as a 15-year-old is not capable of being a consenting adult.
ReplyDeleteI agree that a 17-year-old who has sex with his 15-year-old girlfriend is almost certainly not a danger to children and shouldn't need to go to jail, especially as he was told by police he could live there, but his label implies rape because he committed rape.
